Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang called the state’s Golden Jubilee a “historic milestone for the nation” during the India Today State of the States Conclave: Sikkim @50 held on May 22. He emphasized that the celebration is not just for Sikkim but for the entire country.
Pride in Sikkim’s Journey Since 1975
Marking 50 years since Sikkim joined the Indian Union in 1975, CM Tamang expressed pride in how far the state has come. “A small Himalayan kingdom has completed five decades as part of India. I congratulate the people of Sikkim and India,” he said. He also announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Sikkim on May 29 to take part in the celebrations.
Golden Jubilee for India Today Group Too
The Chief Minister highlighted that this year is also special for the India Today Group, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary as well. “This is a moment that won’t come again. As Sikkim’s sixth Chief Minister, I am honored to lead during this important time,” he said.
Overcoming Challenges Since 2019
CM Tamang shared how his government, which came to power in 2019, faced several obstacles, including the COVID-19 pandemic. “Despite the short time and global crisis, we focused on health, education, and improving connectivity,” he said.
Strong Political Support and Public Trust
In the 2024 assembly elections, the Chief Minister’s party won 31 out of 32 seats, later securing the last one too. “Today, all 32 MLAs are from our party. This shows the strong trust the people have in us,” he said.
Five Key Priorities for Sikkim’s Future
CM Tamang outlined five major focus areas for Sikkim’s growth:
- Connectivity
- Education
- Health
- Agriculture
- Employment
“Connectivity is our top priority. Thanks to the handover of National Highway 10 to NHIDCL, road conditions have improved. By 2026, railway services are expected to begin, boosting tourism and trade,” he added.
New 500-Bed Hospital to Boost Health Services
The CM announced the inauguration of a new 500-bed hospital on May 29, with PM Modi attending. He also mentioned plans to upgrade all district hospitals and build a new one in Pakyong, aiming for world-class healthcare.
Leading in Education Through NEP
Sikkim is making great progress under the National Education Policy (NEP). “We aim to have one university in every constituency so students can get a high-quality education without leaving the state,” CM Tamang said.
Agriculture and Jobs at the Core of Growth
Highlighting economic development, the CM said Sikkim has the highest per capita income in India at Rs 7,181. The focus remains on sustainable jobs, youth empowerment, and skill training.
