Vijay Hazare Trophy: Shubman Gill Sidelined by Food Poisoning; Punjab Crushes Sikkim

Shubman Gill Misses Punjab’s Elite Group C Match

Shubman Gill’s much-anticipated return to domestic cricket was postponed after the India Test and ODI captain missed Punjab’s Vijay Hazare Trophy Elite Group C clash against Sikkim on Saturday, January 3.

Punjab coach Sandeep Sharma revealed that Gill arrived in Jaipur on Friday and was eager to play. However, he fell ill late at night due to food poisoning and was advised to rest.

“Shubman reached Jaipur on Friday and was looking forward to the game, but late in the night he wasn’t feeling well, so he was advised to take rest. He’ll be available for the next match against Goa on Tuesday (Jan 6),” said Sharma.

Punjab Dominates Sikkim Despite Gill’s Absence

Gill’s absence did not impact Punjab’s performance, as the team thrased Sikkim by 10 wickets at the Jaipuria Vidyalaya Ground.

After winning the toss and electing to field, Punjab’s bowlers bundled Sikkim out for just 75 runs in 22.2 overs. Arshdeep Singh led the attack with an impressive 5 wickets for 34 runs in his 10 overs.

Punjab then chased the modest target in just 6.2 overs, finishing at 81 without losing a wicket. Key contributions included:

  • Prabhsimran Singh: 53* off 26 balls

  • Harnoor Singh: 22* off 13 balls

Punjab Tops Group C Table

The victory marked Punjab’s fourth win in five matches, earning them 16 points and placing them at the top of the Group C standings, tied with Mumbai.
