40% Water Loss at Ratey Chu Source, BJP Flags Crisis

A delegation led by Sikkim BJP President DR Thapa, along with senior party leaders, conducted an on-site inspection of the Ratey Chu drinking water source, the main water supply system for Gangtok.

During the visit, the team identified multiple leakage points along the pipeline network. According to the party’s media statement, there are dozens of minor leaks and at least 3–4 major breaches, leading to an estimated 40% loss of drinking water before it reaches households.

This significant wastage has raised serious concerns about water supply management and infrastructure maintenance in the capital city.

Water Crisis Worsened by Lack of Rainfall

The situation has become more critical due to zero significant rainfall in Gangtok since November 2025, which has drastically reduced water levels at the source. While natural factors have contributed to the ongoing water crisis in Sikkim, the BJP alleged that the scale of leakage reflects clear negligence in maintaining public infrastructure.

The party criticized the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) for failing to ensure timely repairs and proper monitoring of the pipeline system.

Demand for Immediate Action and High-Tech Leak Detection

DR Thapa has demanded the urgent deployment of advanced leak detection technology and emergency repair teams to fix all damaged sections of the pipeline without delay. He emphasized the need for quick and transparent intervention to prevent further water loss.

In addition, he urged the State government to:

  • Fast-track the development of alternative pipeline routes

  • Identify reliable and perennial water sources such as Bhusuk Khola

  • Build climate-resilient water infrastructure

  • Ensure long-term water security for Gangtok residents

Tourism and Local Economy at Risk

With the peak tourist season of April and May approaching, ongoing water shortages could negatively impact Sikkim’s tourism industry, which plays a vital role in the state’s economy. Hotels, restaurants, and small businesses may face operational challenges if the water supply remains unstable.

The BJP stated that consistent water shortages not only affect residents’ daily lives but also harm public health, local businesses, and Sikkim’s reputation as a premier travel destination.

Call for Transparent and Decisive Government Response

The Sikkim BJP has called for immediate corrective measures from the PHED and the State government to resolve the issue effectively. The party stressed the importance of preventing similar crises in the future by strengthening infrastructure monitoring and maintenance systems.

Residents of Gangtok, the statement concluded, deserve a reliable and uninterrupted drinking water supply, especially during times of environmental stress and growing demand.
