Lachung Reopens After Months of Closure
Sikkim’s government has reopened the scenic village of Lachung in North Sikkim for tourists after months of closure due to damaged roads. Key attractions like Yumthang Valley and Zero Point are now accessible, just in time for the upcoming festive season.
The reopening aims to revive tourism and support the local economy, giving a much-needed boost to businesses in the region.
Tourism Resumes in Northern Sikkim
Starting Monday, tourists can visit Lachung and nearby areas in the Mangan district. The northern region had been closed for four months due to monsoon damage affecting roads. Online permits will now be issued to regulate visitor access and ensure safety.
However, Lachen and Gurudongmar Lake remain closed for repairs. These destinations will reopen once road infrastructure is fully restored.
Infrastructure Upgrades Improve Travel Experience
A new bridge at Sangkalang has been completed, reducing travel time to Chungthang by up to 90 minutes. To streamline traffic, tourist vehicles must follow new timing rules:
-
Vehicles to Lachung: cross Sangkalang Bridge by 1 PM
-
Vehicles to Gangtok: cross Toong Bridge by 2 PM
These measures ensure smoother travel and enhance visitor experience.
Tourism Industry Welcomes the Move
Industry representatives have welcomed the reopening, emphasizing the positive impact on local businesses and the wider tourism sector. Businesses hope that Lachen and Gurudongmar Lake will open soon, further attracting tourists.
New Attractions: Battlefield Tourism
In addition to Lachung’s reopening, Sikkim Tourism will launch two new destinations on September 27, World Tourism Day, under the “battlefield tourism” initiative:
-
Cho-la: A historic mountain pass from the 1967 India-China war
-
Doklam: Strategic tri-junction site, famous from the 2017 military standoff
Initially, only 25 vehicles per day will visit, ensuring the preservation of historic sites while offering a unique experience for history enthusiasts and adventure seekers.
Sikkim: A Destination for Nature and History Lovers
With infrastructure improvements, new attractions, and enhanced accessibility, Sikkim is positioning itself as a top tourist destination for both nature lovers and history buffs. These efforts aim to revitalize the local economy, promote sustainable tourism, and ensure long-term growth in the state’s tourism sector.
