Government Launches Expanded Health Insurance Program
India has officially expanded its government healthcare program to provide free medical insurance for citizens aged 70 and above. The new plan offers an annual coverage of 500,000 rupees (approximately $6,000) per family, a key promise fulfilled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.
60 Million More Citizens to Benefit
The newly expanded health initiative will now benefit an additional 60 million people, adding to the existing 2018 healthcare program, which already covers over half a billion citizens.
World’s Largest Healthcare Program
This initiative, touted as the world’s largest healthcare program, provides free medical treatment for serious illnesses. Under the plan, eligible poor families receive an annual coverage of 500,000 rupees, making healthcare more accessible.
Improving India’s Public Health System
The latest expansion is part of Modi’s broader efforts to strengthen India’s public health system, which faces challenges such as hospital shortages and a lack of doctors. However, despite these initiatives, India’s healthcare spending remains under 2% of its GDP—one of the lowest in the world.
