Governor of Sikkim Visits Doka-la: Focus on Environmental Sustainability and Army’s Role

The Governor of Sikkim, Om Prakash Mathur, began his official duties for the year with a significant visit to Doka-la, a high-altitude region at 15,000 feet that became notable during the 2017 India-China standoff. Accompanying him was Sanjay Sharma, the Minister of Forest and Environment from the Government of Rajasthan.

The Governor received a warm welcome at 8th Mile JN Road, where local residents, Panchayat and Zilla Panchayat members from Kyongnosla Gram Panchayat Unit, along with officials from the Forest Department and Sikkim Police, gathered. The Governor and Minister participated in planting an oak tree as part of an ongoing environmental initiative. During their interaction with the community, they emphasized the importance of tree plantation in ensuring environmental sustainability and discussed strategies for regional development and conservation efforts.

In Doka-la, the Governor was received by Major General M.S. Rathore, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 17th Mountain Division, along with senior Army officials. The Governor expressed deep gratitude for the Army’s dedication and courage in safeguarding the nation’s borders, acknowledging the crucial role the military plays in national security and honor.

The Governor’s visit also included a trip to Kupup, known for housing the world’s highest golf course, underscoring the region’s potential for tourism and development. On his return journey, he stopped at Dichu Village, where he engaged with locals about their concerns. The Governor assured them that necessary support would be provided through the Raj Bhavan to address their needs.

This visit highlights the Governor’s commitment to regional development, environmental conservation, and recognizing the Indian Army’s vital contributions. It reinforced the connection between the government and local communities while promoting Sikkim’s growth and well-being.
