Google Announces $15 Billion Data Center Expansion in India, Its Largest Outside the U.S.

Tech giant Google has announced a $15 billion investment plan to build and expand data centers in India’s Andhra Pradesh, marking the company’s largest project outside the United States. The initiative aims to strengthen AI and cloud computing infrastructure while creating thousands of jobs across the region.

🌏 A Major Step Toward Building India’s AI Hub

At an event in New Delhi, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian revealed that the Visakhapatnam data center campus will initially have a 1-gigawatt capacity, with plans to expand to multiple gigawatts in the coming years.

“This is the largest AI hub we are investing in outside the U.S.,” said Kurian. “It forms part of our global network of AI centers operating across 12 countries.”

This announcement positions India as a key player in the global AI infrastructure network, reinforcing its growing role in cloud technology and digital transformation.

💰 $15 Billion Investment to Create 188,000 Jobs

According to state officials, Google’s expansion will generate approximately 188,000 new employment opportunities across various sectors — including engineering, data management, and construction.

Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for Human Resources Development, described the project as the result of “a year of intense discussions and relentless efforts.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “This is just the beginning of a new chapter in India’s technology growth story.”

🧠 Boost to India’s Cloud and AI Infrastructure

India has rapidly emerged as a global hub for artificial intelligence and cloud innovation, attracting major tech investments in recent years. Alongside Google, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure have also established large-scale data centers across multiple Indian states.

These developments align with the Indian government’s Digital India initiative, which aims to promote data sovereignty, AI-driven innovation, and technological self-reliance.

📱 Why India Matters to Google

Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, views India as one of its fastest-growing markets, thanks to its massive internet user base, dominance of Android smartphones, and billions of YouTube viewers.

The new data center network in Visakhapatnam is expected to enhance Google Cloud’s local performance, improve data security, and support AI-based businesses across India.

With this move, Google strengthens its long-term commitment to India’s digital economy while contributing to the country’s ambition to become a global technology powerhouse.
