Prem Singh Tamang Signals Early Start to SKM’s 2029 Election Campaign

SKM Begins Groundwork for Third Consecutive Term

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has announced an early start to the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha’s (SKM) 2029 Assembly election campaign, indicating the party’s ambition to secure a third straight term in power.

Speaking on December 21 during the 17th Rholu Diwas celebrations, Tamang said the party will launch “Mission 2029”, with preparations beginning at the grassroots level from next year.

Focus on Grassroots Mobilisation

Addressing party leaders and workers, the Chief Minister urged SKM cadres to start early preparations across villages and local units.

“All leaders and workers should gear up for the 2029 Assembly elections by strengthening the party at the grassroots,” Tamang said.

The strategy aims to build strong local engagement, ensuring sustained support across constituencies.

Rholu Diwas: A Turning Point in SKM’s Journey

Recalling the historical significance of Rholu Diwas, Tamang said it was from the Rholu Mandir in 2009 that he first challenged the then-ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) led by former Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling.

Before the SKM was officially formed in 2013, Tamang’s group within the SDF was known as “Golay Khema”, which later evolved into the current ruling party.

Acknowledging Party Support During Difficult Times

The SKM chief expressed gratitude to party leaders and workers, saying their loyalty and commitment during challenging years helped build the foundation for the party’s eventual rise to power.

He credited their support for SKM’s electoral success and stable governance since 2019.

Government’s Focus on Inclusive Development

Highlighting his government’s achievements, Tamang said the SKM administration has prioritised development, welfare, and inclusive growth, with special attention on poor and marginalised communities across Sikkim.

He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to balanced development, social welfare schemes, and long-term progress.

Release of SKM Calendar and Party Programmes

During the event, the Chief Minister also released SKM’s official calendar and diary for 2026 in the presence of senior leaders and party workers.

He later visited the Rholu Mandir in the Melli constituency to offer prayers.

SKM Foundation Day to Feature Youth and Women Conventions

Looking ahead, Tamang announced that the SKM foundation day celebrations in February next year will be a three-day event. The programme will include dedicated conventions for youth and women, highlighting the party’s focus on inclusive participation.

The Rholu Diwas observance was held on a modest scale, as it coincided with Sikkim’s traditional Losoong/Namsoong festival.

Why This Matters

The early launch of Mission 2029 signals SKM’s intention to consolidate its political position well ahead of the next Assembly elections, using grassroots outreach and organisational strength to maintain power in Sikkim.
