“Sikkim Landslide Kills 4, Rescue Operations Ongoing After Heavy Rainfall”

At least four people have died and three remain missing after a massive landslide triggered by heavy rainfall struck the Upper Rimbi area in Sikkim’s Yangthang village.

Casualties and Injuries

According to police reports, three victims died instantly when mud and boulders crashed into their home early Friday morning while they were asleep. A fourth victim, a woman, later succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

Two other injured residents were evacuated using a makeshift log bridge over the overflowing Hume River and transferred to the District Hospital. One remains in critical condition, while three people are still missing.

Challenges in Rescue Operations

Senior police officer Tshering Sherpa said the rugged terrain and adverse weather conditions have made the rescue and recovery operations extremely difficult. Authorities continue to conduct search and rescue missions in the affected area to locate the missing individuals.

Authorities’ Response and Safety Measures

Officials have urged residents in landslide-prone areas to stay alert and follow safety instructions from local authorities. Emergency teams are working round the clock to evacuate vulnerable populations and prevent further casualties.
