Sikkim to Receive Rs 165 Crore for Tourism Infrastructure Projects to Boost Eco-Tourism

Sikkim is set to benefit from two major tourism infrastructure projects under the Government of India’s Rs 3,295 crore initiative, aimed at improving tourist destinations across 23 states. Funded through the Scheme of Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI), these projects are designed to enhance the tourism experience by developing world-class facilities while promoting local culture and heritage.

1. Skywalk Project at Bhaleydunga, South Sikkim

The first of these projects is a Skywalk to be developed at Bhaleydunga, Yangang, Namchi in South Sikkim, with an allocated budget of Rs 97.37 crore. This 240-meter-long glass-bottom Skywalk will be built at an altitude of 3,200 meters. Visitors will be able to access the Skywalk via a 3.5-kilometer ropeway, offering panoramic views of the Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary and Bhaleydunga Peak, making it an excellent addition to Sikkim’s growing eco-tourism infrastructure.

The project will also include a funicular for easy access and support facilities, creating 61 local jobs in the region. This initiative is intended to strengthen Sikkim’s position as a leading eco-tourism hub, attracting both domestic and international visitors.

2. Infrastructure Development at Nathula Pass

The second project focuses on improving the tourism infrastructure at Nathula Pass, a vital point on the India-China border. With an investment of Rs 68.19 crore, the project aims to address congestion and improve the overall tourist experience by adding additional parking spaces, tourist information centers, and recreational amenities at the site.

Nathula Pass, a popular destination for tourists, will benefit from these improvements by providing better facilities and accommodating the increasing number of visitors. This development is expected to create 30 local jobs and significantly enhance the region’s tourism appeal.

Impact on Sikkim’s Tourism and Local Communities

These two projects are expected to have a positive impact on Sikkim’s tourism sector, enhancing its profile as a prime eco-tourism destination. Moreover, the projects will create sustainable economic opportunities for local communities, promoting employment and the growth of small businesses in the region.

By focusing on eco-friendly tourism and infrastructure, the Government of India’s investments aim to make Sikkim a more accessible and attractive destination for travelers while also preserving its natural beauty and promoting local culture.

The Rs 165 crore investment in Sikkim’s tourism sector is part of a larger effort to develop tourism infrastructure nationwide, supporting the economic growth of various states and fostering sustainable tourism practices.
