“Dr. Rajendra Bhandari Advocates for Cultural and Environmental Preservation at Sikkim’s International Literary Festival”

Festival Launches with a Focus on Nepali Literature and Culture

The 2024 International Literary Festival opened on October 26 at Manan Kendra, Sikkim, bringing together distinguished voices in Nepali literature. Among them, Dr. Rajendra Bhandari, a renowned poet and associate professor at Sikkim State College, shared insights on the need to preserve cultural heritage and protect the environment.

Dr. Bhandari Reflects on His Connection to Sikkim

Having lived in Gangtok for over 30 years, Dr. Bhandari expressed deep ties to Sikkim and voiced his sadness over recent environmental tragedies, including the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). “Sikkim feels more organic than places like Darjeeling and Kalimpong, and even in rural areas, people honor traditions and culture,” he shared.

Personal Story Highlights Sikkim’s Cultural Heritage

Reflecting on his time in Soreng, Dr. Bhandari recounted a memory of recording a local musician playing the madhal, a traditional instrument. “Losing that recording felt like losing a piece of my life,” he said, emphasizing the significance of preserving Sikkim’s rich cultural heritage.

Emphasizing Education Beyond Textbooks

As an educator, Dr. Bhandari stressed the importance of incorporating environmental and cultural studies into school curriculums. “Our students should learn about their environment, traditions, and native flora,” he noted, advocating for teaching that fosters appreciation for Nepali heritage and its continuity for future generations.

Addressing Global Issues of Isolation and Environmental Crisis

Dr. Bhandari raised concerns about the global trend of isolation, referencing London’s “Ministry of Loneliness” and similar movements in Japan, where people seek meaningful connections in a digital age. He also called attention to modern conflicts, urging a greater focus on environmental protection, stating, “In times like these, safeguarding Mother Earth is essential.”

Balanced View on Artificial Intelligence

On the topic of artificial intelligence (AI), Dr. Bhandari acknowledged its potential benefits while cautioning against over-reliance. “AI is both a blessing and a potential threat,” he said, warning that it could impact human creativity if misused. “AI can’t replace human emotions or love; it should enhance, not overshadow, our creative expressions.”

Celebrating Cultural Dialogue and Literary Trends

Running from October 26 to 27, the International Literary Festival promises to explore contemporary themes in Nepali literature, offering a platform for writers, scholars, and enthusiasts to connect and celebrate the richness of storytelling and cultural heritage.
